The arden — derived from the Brythonic word for high, cf. Welsh ardu, and by extension, “highland” – was a thickly forested area in central England encompassing the village of Henley-in-Arden, Iron Age hill forts, Roman forts, and medieval era settlements such as Coleshill and Ulverlei. It was bounded by the Roman roads Icknield Street, Watling Street and Fosse Way as well as the prehistoric salt track from Droitwich. A waymarked UK National Trail, the Arden Way, traces old paths and routes in the area today.
A relic of the arden is still visible in Henley-in-Arden, where an ancient mark stone known as the Coughton Cross marks the southern edge of the former forest. Until the 16th century, royal forests subject to forest law occupied much of the region and smaller lands were privately cultivated.
The Arden Club hosts a number of community events in the Gild Hall, including dinners, concerts and theatrical performances, and is available for private parties, weddings and meetings. A grassy amphitheater and a swimming pool sit to the rear of the hall. The Arden Fair is held annually in September and the fairgrounds are home to the annual Holistic Expo.
