If you are serious about airsoft, then it’s important that your gear is up to par. While some people may try to get away without a protective mask, it’s always best to be safe and invest in one. Other essential pieces of equipment include a tactical vest and knee/elbow pads. It’s also a good idea to wear gloves (paintball gloves or fitted work gloves work well), chest protector and a helmet.
While there are some differences, airsoft gear is generally considered to be the same as what is worn in paintball, with the exception of the mask and helmet. Protective eyewear is highly recommended, and players are advised to look for a pair that meet or exceed the ANSI Z87.1 standard.
Guns are typically categorized as mechanical, which operates by coil spring-loaded piston air pump that is manually cocked (such as the Spring guns, commonly referred to as “Springers”) or pneumatic, which uses a valve-controlled release of prefilled bottled gas such as compressed propane mixed with silicone oil (commonly called “Green Gas”) and carbon dioxide from a canister or CO2 tanks. Many AEGs use an internal mechanism that uses a spring to force a rubber tube (called a “bucking”) into contact with the wall of the pellet, which gives it backspin or magnus lift to maintain a more accurate trajectory. Many AEGs also have the ability to be upgraded to achieve more realistic accuracy and appearance.
