A Move Out Cleaning Checklist Can Help You Get Your Deposit Back From Your Landlord

Posted on February 11, 2021

Whether you are moving out of an apartment, condo, or house, a thorough cleaning is a must. A move out cleaning checklist can help you get your deposit back from a landlord, and a job well done will ensure the next tenant has a clean apartment to enjoy as they live there.

While regular cleaning services focus on dusting and vacuuming floors, a comprehensive move out cleaning requires extra time to thoroughly scrub and wipe every inch of a space, especially bathrooms. Many cleaning service companies specialize in move out cleaning, but it’s important to research a few different options before hiring one. Checking out a company’s reputation, scheduling flexibility, and pricing are crucial when choosing a company for this special task.

A reliable cleaning service should be willing to work within your schedule and have no problem working around furniture that must stay in the room while you’re packing it up. Some cleaning services also offer a guarantee for their work, which is particularly helpful for move out cleaning as this type of cleaning often occurs just before closing or the end of a lease agreement.

Before moving out of an apartment, condo, or home, make sure you’ve paid your last month’s rent and that you have a copy of your check or receipt in a safe place. This will protect you from any potential disputes with your landlord about the condition of the property or the amount of your deposit.

If you are able to, begin packing in advance of your move out date. This will not only make the moving out process much more convenient but will save you a lot of time and stress in the long run. It’s best to start with rooms that are used the least, such as bedrooms or guest rooms. Once these are packed, you can concentrate on cleaning those areas that require a more thorough effort, such as the kitchen and bathrooms.

In the kitchen, a clean dishwasher and oven are a must. Wiping down countertops and faucets can help to remove stains, while a sanitizing wipe or all-purpose cleaner can make quick work of dirty dishes and glassware. In the bathroom, you’ll need to clean all surfaces, including toilets, showers, and bathtubs. If there are scuff marks on walls or molding, it’s a good idea to remove and repaint the area before leaving.

If you have pets, it’s a good idea to do a final walk-through of the entire home just before your scheduled cleaning appointment. Ensure that all pet hair has been removed and all areas are sanitized. In addition, make sure to empty out the refrigerator and defrost the freezer. Finally, sweep and mop hard surface floors and vacuum carpets and rugs. Dusting light fixtures and ceiling fans should be a priority, as well. Then, you’re ready for the big move out!
